In Accordance is a new storytelling and multimedia project by Katie Shepherd Christiansen to bring guidance, dignity, knowledge, and hope to rejoining the natural world. Three project arms—an illustrated book formatted as a seasonal almanac, a companion film, and an outreach campaign—offer a counter-narrative to our culture’s dominant human-nature relationship. In Accordance holistically addresses the complexity of our situation by integrating knowledge across disciplines spanning ecology, history, culture, psychology, and philosophy, to clarify the kind of people we are, hope to be, and need to be to build a better future.

Multimedia environmental storytelling for the problem at hand.

In Accordance Almanac

In Accordance Almanac will apply and integrate scientific knowledge across an array of ecological and cultural subjects, to bring to life the cyclical, concurrent happenings of this world-renowned ecosystem. Weaving narrative, illustration, and photography, the book’s interdisciplinary and multimedia storytelling style will reinforce themes of interconnection to reveal the constant interplay between humans and our environments. Taken as a whole, the book may serve as a blueprint for living in accordance with nature.

Written through immersive seasonal writing residencies occurring at locations across the ecosystem, these place-based case studies reflect the story of nature and humanity as a whole, for Greater Yellowstone and the world.

In Accordance companion film

A companion to In Accordance Almanac, the film aims to reconnect people to the land, to wild communities, and to one another, and to empower underrepresented voices in conservation. Mirroring the book, the film will unveil an honest and heartening example of living in synchrony with the wild landscapes of Greater Yellowstone. The short documentary will take on the complex intersection of nature, culture, community, motherhood, and creative work, following Katie as these real-life threads influence and inspire her work on the book to preserve nature for future generations.

Led by the release of the book and film, the impact campaign will convene and inspire audiences around the project’s urgent call to action, elevating the project’s message of self-reflection, growth, and personal and cultural transformation.
